Data made accessible with intuitive BI

Bounce was searching for a tool to centralize its data capabilities and empower all employees with an easy-to-use data and analytics tool. Here's why they chose Steep.

About Bounce:

Bounce offers the largest global luggage storage network of 13,000+ partners across 4000+ cities worldwide.

  • Industry: Luggage storage
  • Size: 100+ employees in USA, Portugal, and Japan
  • Headquarters: San Francisco
  • Visit: bounce.com

We talked to Guilherme Duarte, CTO at Bounce, who shared his experience of switching to Steep and how it has been received by the company's business users.

“Steep has been foundational to how Bounce has been able to democratize data throughout the organization.”

Challenges: Complex and fragmented toolset

Bounce was struggling to make the most of its data, because the tools they had didn't live up to their needs for empowering the company with data. The analytics team at Bounce identified three main challenges:

  1. Inconsistent definitions: Like many companies, Bounce lacked a central way to store and access metric definitions, which made it difficult to ensure that agreed-upon definitions were applied universally.
  2. Complex data tools: Employees wanted to explore and analyze data on their own, but the tools at hand were too complex for them to navigate. As a result, they had to rely on the analytics team even for simple questions.
  3. Operational inefficiencies: Bounce was using several tools for metrics, targets, and KPIs, which led to a scattered workflow and additional maintenance work.

Scope: Finding a BI tool that serves the entire company

As the data team at Bounce is responsible for enabling all teams with data, it's crucial that the business users feel comfortable with the BI tool and that they can get up and running quickly without extensive training or technical skills.

Bounce's three main criteria in a new BI tool were:

  1. A hub that could facilitate all company data, including metrics, KPIs and targets.
  2. A tool that made data accessible to everyone in the company in an easy-to-use interface.
  3. Strong integration with the dbt Cloud semantic layer.

“Nothing can be done without data. We're trying to empower teams to reach their goals by making it easier for them to make business decisions and choose the right strategic perspectives.”

Solution: Accessible and intuitive BI

The decision to go with Steep was made through an individual evaluation of BI tools by different team members. After testing tools, the team shared their opinions with each other and had unanimously all landed on Steep.

Additionally, Steep works side by side with dbt Cloud's semantic layer with a seamless integration, bringing standardized metric definitions from dbt Cloud directly into Steep for analysis.

Guilherme states that Steep is easy to introduce to business users without deep data knowledge. He uses three basic concepts to explain the tool to non-data teammates.

  • Teams: Organizing coworkers into teams in Steep enables the data team to give different job functions access to specific data, allowing users only to see what's relevant to them.
  • Metrics: With Steep's metric-first approach all data is accessible to users in a catalog. Business users don't need technical knowledge to access data or understand metrics.
  • Reports: All metrics in Steep can be managed and visualized in reports. Users can easily create their own reports to explore metrics relevant to them and collaborate with other teams to gain valuable insights.

“I would recommend Steep to anyone who's looking for an easy-to-use but powerful BI tool.”

Impact: Enabling data-driven decisions across teams

Steep's impact on Guilherme's team was immediate. They began saving significant time in their daily work, like exploring data fast without creating unnecessary joins or filters. Guilherme shares that his team's day-to-day tasks have become much more efficient and enjoyable.

Benefits of using Steep:

  • Data-driven culture: Steep helped Bounce adopt a data-driven culture and has made data accessible to everyone in the company.
  • Rapid onboarding and support: Employees can quickly adapt to the tool, minimizing the training required, while Steep offers timely support to increase adoption of the tool.
  • Enhanced confidence: Steep's intuitive user interface creates a stronger sense of empowerment among users. Data is easy to explore and centralized metric definitions ensure that everyone is always looking at the same numbers.
  • Fast and efficient data exploration: Metrics in Steep enable straightforward analysis of all data without unnecessary joins and filters.
  • Less time spent on repetitive and manual tasks, such as visualizing data for presentations.

With Steep, Bounce has transformed its approach to data, making insights accessible and empowering every team member to make informed decisions. The intuitive interface and seamless integration with dbt Semantic Layer have saved time and fostered a data-driven culture across the company.
