Background Fast growth, lots of questions

At LumiQ's pace of growth, every team is asking questions about the numbers: how content performs, how members engage, where revenue comes from.

Paul Gallagher joined as Director of Data & Analytics to build the data stack from the ground up.

Approach The model, not the dashboards

Paul decided early that the data team's focus would be the model, not the dashboards. That means owning the definitions everything else depends on:

  • What counts as a listen
  • What makes a member active
  • Which dimensions a metric can be cut by
  • The context that makes each number mean the same thing in RevOps, Customer Success and the leadership team

Everyone else builds and explores on top of that, in Steep or by asking in plain language.

Setup Metrics-first on a brand-new dbt stack

Paul had followed Steep since meeting the team at Coalesce, and the metrics-first idea is what stuck. LumiQ is rolling out Steep on a brand-new stack built around dbt, with the semantic model as the source of definitions from day one.

“I've used most BI tools out there and never really liked any of them. What resonated with Steep was the metric-first approach. We define a metric in one place, and everyone knows that when they pull a number, it's the same number everyone else is looking at. That's how you build trust in data.”
